  1. What is Customer Experience Management (CEM)? Google it and you’ll find various definitions that explain this currently-buzz worthy concept.

We live in the age of the customer and it’s time to clarify what CEM truly means. Before I get into that, let’s define what CEM is not: collecting feedback, responding to feedback, or tracking your Net Promoter Score – none of these actions individually represent Customer Experience Management.

  2. It used to be that retailers couldn’t wait to hear the unmistakable sound that said the holidays had arrived — ringing cash registers. Today’s businesses are adapting to the new signs of the holiday season — digital clicks and online carts. Black Friday, the most joyous of all shopping days in the year for retailers and customers alike, still tops the list of sales spikes for the year, followed closely by its relatively new cousin Cyber Monday.

  3. That is according to a study by market researcher Maru/edr, which found that less than half of financial services customers have been asked to give feedback in the last year.

This is despite the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) Treating Customers Fairly policy suggesting that feedback is one of the best ways to comply with the initiative.

The research also shows that around half of customers think they can be treated unfairly by providers, while less than a third rate the communications they receive highly.

“Customer feedback is vital for brands looking to protect and grow their market share," Maru/edr chief research officer, Steve Brockway, said.

  4. The biggest obstacle to knowing what customers really think about us? Fear.

We fear they’ll tell us our product or service stinks, that we’re horrible people and we should never have set foot on earth.

Yet most companies never hear that type of painful feedback. Our research finds that companies with strong word of mouth and customer devotion behave like high-performance athletes when it comes to focusing on customer feedback. In effect, they are feedback machines. Customer feedback drives their marketing strategies, product development and service expectations.

  6. It’s time for another product update and we’ve got plenty to share with you this month. We have made a lot of progress on the accessibility front these past few months, including the introduction of a new integration solution together with Zapier and our recently attained WCAG certification. We’ve also added some cool new features to the platform itself, including some additional feedback form customisation options.

  7. The most overrated thing in business—and in life—is praise. Praise makes you feel terrific, but it’s not very illuminating because you almost always already know what you’re good at, don’t you? Criticism is the petri dish of improvement. Without awareness of what you could do better, you are unlikely to actually do it better, right? Why then do so many companies go to the trouble of asking customers to complete surveys, but then invalidate the responses by incentivizing the wrong behaviors?

  9. In the face of a flood of "fake news," sensationalism, and mass marketing, Facebook has announced it is testing a new, more restricted and curated version of its News Feed.

Based on user feedback, Facebook will determine and prioritize the trustworthiness of news outlets. This goes beyond the social network's previous decision last week to promote "meaningful posts" by filtering out posts and video content from brand posts and boosting those that friends and family share.

  10. In a blog post explaining ways in which it collects user feedback, Facebook says that tens of thousands of its users opt in to take the company’s user research surveys every week on the platform.
